A Learning Experience Years in the Making

by J. Edward Crowder
(Florence, Alabama, USA)

I thought the potential audience of a casino gambling book would be quite limited, and thus the royalties small, so I decided to publish the book through a POD publisher where I could earn more money per book sold. I never submitted the book to a publisher or literary agent.

The first gambling book contained many typographical and table mistakes (both in content and design, such as the printing of part of a table on one page and the remainder on the next page). I was unhappy with the result.

The 2nd Edition, a few years later, was published by a different POD publisher, who provided more in the way of marketing and support. My experience in this case was much better, and I feel some pride in the result.

Where are the numbers?

James, you're a Ph.D and a gambling expert! What bigger gamble is there than self publishing? We want to know so much more than you gave us...

Did going POD versus printing up a few thousand copies amount to hedging your bet? Were you a winner or a loser? Would you play this game again or find a new one?
