A Long, Hard Road...

Pray for Death (Original Cover)

Detective Fiction

Publishing a book didn't prove to be as hard, as it was long. Being my first publication, I had no idea where to even begin.

After writing the book (freehand), I started doing hours, and hours of research on the internet... Everything from Agents, to Query Letters, to Synopsis', to Summaries. "Holy smokes" I said to myself, "what have I gotten myself into!" At some times I would have 30 pages of searches and materials open on my computer at once (it froze up on me many times).

After months of research, and acquiring a general knowledge of how the whole industry works, I began to bring my project to life. Using this information, I submitted to 100's of Literary Agents, only to be politely turned down by all of them (most never even reqested more than the Query letter).

However, with much perseverance, I pressed on, determined to get my Novel in the hands of, well, Anyone! After many months of typing, I finally had gotten the Novel into a rough draft form using Microsoft Works. I then later formatted it to size, typesetting, Chapter layout, and a hundred other minute details to make it actually look like a book.

Then, I got a lucky break in one of my searches, and I discovered self-publishing. I had heard bad things about this type of publishing in my research, but something told me to give it a shot (just make sure that I did my homework on the companies that offer this service).

Well, now the fruits of my labor have paid off. The first book in my series (Pray for Death) is now published, and I am working on the second book in the series (Pray for Mercy). It took a couple of years to get to this point, but it was all well worth it...

Thanks for checking back in
by: Steve B.

Cash, anyone who says, "You're absolutely right," to me gets 5 stars!

Sorry we didn't catch you at your best, and we'll all be looking forward to when you get back to fill in some of the blanks. Be sure to give yourself 5 stars for effort when you return!

(That's pretty freaky about the phantom press release. Just a reminder, I guess, that the internet is hardly something we can contol!)

You are absolutely right!
by: Cash

You are absolutely right. I should not have written this when I was so tired and mentally exhausted. I will come back and update it when I am well rested.

As for the "Press Release"... Wow! That was news to me. I did not write that. As a matter of fact, I am currently seeking the services of a publicist to do that for me. Something tells me that a "friend" may have had something to do with that (It was the worst one I've ever seen).

As for the Lulu Page: It is a Pre-made template program built into their site. I did web design and graphics for years, and have even notified them about the poor quality of the choices they offer.

As for "the hard part"... I may not have conveyed my true thoughts correctly (reason stated above). Again, I will be back to post more when I am not 80+ hours into a work week.

Thanks for the comment.

Writing may be harder than you think
by: Steve B.

Cash, thanks for your contribution. I want to say a few things.

First, sloppiness deprives an author of credibility! Your post needs editing, and your Lulu page could use some too. Capital letters aren't used as you use them. And you posted on this site under Biography, when clearly Genre Fiction was where you belonged! (I moved you.)

Second, I found a press release you posted. Same editing problems, and it suffered from a lack of believability. Have you really "...taken the Media World by storm"? And if "the 1st Edition copies cannot even be printed fast enough to meet the demand," then how come you're still trying so hard to sell them?

Finally, I'm struck by how you seem to convey that publishing the book pretty much ended with the printing of it. Aren't you hoping to sell them to a skeptical public? I'd love it if you said more about that. (You can do so by adding your own Comment.)

I do wish you the best of luck. But it could be that writing (and publishing) should be a little harder than you think!
