Avoiding Agendas!

Woman Redeemed

Woman Redeemed

I wrote Woman Redeemed wanting to capture real women of the 1st century and to portray Mary Magdalene in a realistic way that every woman could connect with.

I believe I accomplished this. And have been told so by many readers, reviewers, etc...

And so, I went looking for publishers. I recieved many positive comments about my writing, but rejection because either they "don't do" religious writing, or, from many Christian Publishers - it didn't fit their personal agenda...What agenda? you ask...

Well, depending on what denomination of Christianity they were promoting, they wanted me to write in a way that was skewed in their direction...odd I thought, what does Christ think about all this word-smithing and re-interpretation of His Word... My book, by the way, uses texts from all of the traditions and therefore is not out to prove who Mary Magdalene is, but rather to celebrate her womanhood and her place as a follower of Christ... So, because I didn't outwardly reject some of the historical evidence in order to show that one theory about her is the only one, I did not fit any one else's agenda...So, after being frustrated with that, I went to look for an agent.

Well, same story...They love the writing, the historical research, etc., but are afraid to market it...After I recieved three rejection letters where the agent wrote in pen at the end that it is a book they would enjoy reading, but did not know where they would go with it, I decided to go to a self-publisher.

And here we are...every one who reads it, loves it, but because it is self-published, I struggle to get it into anyone's hands...And now that I've spoken at various churchs, several denominations are accepting it - too bad they don't know how subjectively their publishers are feeding them "Christian Literature"...

It is an uphill struggle, but one I take step by step...

More on Marketing
by: Christine

I've taken the book where I think it will get the most appreciation...Church Women's Groups. I have spoken at a few and have a few more set up in the next few months. Speaking is a natural transition for me as I was a teacher for 12 years, however, this is not for everyone and I am blessed that I had enough connections to get me my first few "gigs"...it's a tough road...

Also, I've been writing articles for every Christian website that will take me. I've also contributed to my local paper about family issues and ENDOW - a wonderful group based here in Denver...it stands for Educating on the Nature and Dignity of Women...I've got a booth at their conference and I'm speaking at their luncheaon in the spring...

So, it's a lot of pounding pavement thus far...

Hello, Christine
by: Julie W. B.

I'm a children's author, self-published. It took me 14 yrs. to bring my book to fruition.
(I'm on this site: Julie W. Buscher "Homer the Helicopter Grand Canyon Adventures.") Anyway, almost a yr. ago I joined the Colorado Independent Publishers Assoc. -- CIPA. They meet once a month in Denver. I wish I'd joined this wonderful organization 14 yrs. ago! They're an org. for self-published authors, and "wanna be" self-published authors.

Do a google search for their website; see what you think. I highly recommend joining CIPA.

Questioning dogma
by: Steve B. (webmaster)

Christine, congratulations on your fine litarena.com review. Patrick is a tough critic and has mentioned you to me previously as a self published author of note!

I wish you'd told us a little more about your marketing efforts to date (and you're still free to. Just reply!) I have to tell you: I don't think your website is doing you justice.

Here's a tool you might find interesting. It tells me that 74,000 people Google MARY MAGDALENE per month. That's a ton. Can we agree that's a lot? I'm guessing though that not very many of them find your site.

That's because there's not a lot of information about Mary Magdalene on your site. There's a lot of information about your BOOK about Mary Magdalene, but when it comes to search engines, that's not the same thing. Google assumes searchers are looking for information...not books that contain information.

But here's the irony: it sounds like you're one of the world's great sources of information on Mary Magdalene! People who are lesser sources are drowning in traffic, getting decent-sized chunks of those 74,000 searchers.

You could do it too. But you'd have to make a commitment to putting more of your knowledge on the web.

I know a guy who wrote a book about the life of Jesus. (Reassembled the stories from the gospel in chronological order.) Now he's setting up a website to attract attention for his book.

Take a look. Can you see why he's going to get many times more traffic than your site?

It might not be the site you would write, but it's there providing information that at least attempts to speak to what people are searching for.

A search is called a "query" for reason. It's a search for answers. If you want a website that will be found for Mary Magdalene queries, you're going to need to provide A LOT more answers.

Does that make sense?

The reason I say all this is because I have a pretty good sense of all the research that went into your book. A ton, right? But the book is a novel, while a website seeks to provide hard information.

Your research - that which made it into the novel, and that which didn't make it into the novel - are not being made full use of. It could be posted to the web, and done so in such a fashion that people will come searching for it.

Come searching for the information...then FIND your book. The same way it's happening for the fellow I mentioned. He's following a process described here:

http://ctpm.sitesell.com/writingsuccess.html

It's the same process I use to develop my sites, and it works. It strikes me as perfect for someone with so much darn RESEARCH lying around!
