PR: What works? An Author’s Perspective
My name is Kristie Jones and I am a first time author. My book is called Stories from Black Dog Ranch and it is a true story. I used to be a city girl until I decided to move back to my hometown in Missouri. When I moved back home, I found my mission in life.
I began to take care of abandoned animals on my ranch. Their stories inspired me to write my book with
BRIO: Publishing (and Book P.R.) Made Simple. The process of writing and publishing a book is very interesting, but anyone who thinks they can become rich and famous writing a book should think of another profession. It is a lot of hard work. In addition to the writing, editing and illustrations, there are book signings, book readings, radio interviews, and newspaper interviews.
Getting a book in front of the public is not easy, but, in my opinion, one of the ways that works is to study your audience and find out how to get in front of them. My audience is children under 12. One of the easiest ways to find that audience is to go to elementary schools and do readings. This works because children will tell their parents about the book and will go to the web site and buy.
Other techniques that work are book signings, but only if you get media attention for the event. You have to make your topic timely or else TV stations will not pick it up. Tie it to a news event, film, or TV show. Something people care about.
In order to make ways in publishing, especially self-publishing, one must have patience. This is the most important quality. One minute you will think nothing is happening and the next moment you are on your local TV station.
Keep trying and above all, have fun with your book!
