If art or photography is your thing, self publishing is an option. But if you want a coffee table quality book, it's not going to be easy...or cheap. Take the concerns you normally have with the archival nature of your work and multiply them.

  • preparing your work for reproduction
  • design and layout
  • paper quality
  • ink quality
  • binding quality

Translation: there's an overwhelming amount of detail to concern yourself with before you even get to think about the marketing and selling of your book. And of course, self publishing photography and art is expensive.

You'll be facing the same cost-per-unit dilemma that text publishers do...only multiplied. Do a small press run (in case the books don't sell) to keep your total cost relatively low, or invest in a huge press run to keep your per unit costs relatively low?
