Don't waste your time; Go with a POD

by Bob Frey
(USA)

The DVD Murders

The DVD Murders

Genre: Fiction, Mystery

My advice is to go with a Print On Demand (POD) publisher.

After years and years of pounding my head against the wall trying to get a traditional publisher, after submitting several novels, after several agents, all I had to show for it was a shitload of rejection slips and hundreds, if not thousands of dollars down the toilet.

Check out a group called Murder Must Advertise on the web. Many of the mystery authors there have two, three, and more mystery books published by traditional publishers, top publishers at that, and they are still working at a day job.

According to these authors, even if published by a Random House or whatever, you are on your own to promote your book. So why knock your head against a wall trying to get a publisher or an agent, when you wind up promoting your book yourself.

Save yourself a lot of heartache and frustration, go with a POD and then promote your book. Just remember to get a good editor to review your book before you have a POD print it.

Always good to see one's own research confirmed
by: Ally Hauptmann-Gurski

thx for writing this. Parallel to writing my historical novel I checked things out on the net, from which directions the winds were blowing, and came to exactly the same conclusion.

Still, some friends were still influenced by blurbs and press releases. Your book is so good, you will find a publisher, they said. I made one submission and got a rejection slip that was dated prior to my dispatch (?).

Well, no chance in Australia, where you have to be 20 or less. The latest writing sensation wrote her book, so the promo says at 11 and 12 (?!?!). The next star will write the book on the potty - I'll eat my broom if it does not happen within 3 years.

'Most books don't make their advance back', a copyright attorney wrote in his scribe, so we have not missed a lot.

If we could somehow get a cooperative/shop together which only sells SP books, CDs, and DVDs we would be laughing. Sometime people don't ring you to buy a book - if they could go in a little shop, sales would be increased significantly. For the tourists it would also be a good thing, because currently they have to buy either the same things everywhere Made in C. or spend a fortune on local handicrafts.

My book LA PLEVITSKAYA, A Russian Gypsy Singer in Tsarist Russia and in Exile is here:
