E-cookbooks match food and wine

'Bacchus and the Bird' Cover

I've had a book/ebook about matching food with unusual wine varieties in preparation for many moons... it still is, I'm retired and I no longer have time to do so many things.

So I decided to publish a couple of chapters as ebooks to test the water.

The first, "10 dishes with Sangiovese," is published on my website. (An SBI site just like this one!) It is free as an incentive to get people to sign up to my newsletter. It has been moderately successful, but not a tearaway success.

The second book, "Bacchus and the Bird," is published on Guidegecko. Again it is free. Used as a promotion for my site, but I will eventually expand it and start selling it rather than giving it away.

Guidegecko is a relatively new platform but they have 3 things which I like.

1. They allow you to upload your book for free. They give you a MS word template to use if you like but you can use your own method of writing and producing a PDF.

2. They have an affiliate program, so you can promote other ebooks as well as your own work.

3. You can use GG as a platform for Print on demand to sell your books in hard copy, again free to set up but you pay the printing cost of course.

4. (I know I said 3 but I'm overdelivering!) You can use GG's affiliate program to recruit other webmasters/bloggers to promote your book.

So GG is a useful service to anyone who has travel related content. It can be used by beginners to test the water or it can be a major outlet for your work.

Thus far I have had a few downloads of the free book. I have a few embedded affiliate links in the book that may eventually pay of. I am not yet ready to do any serious promotion of the book but when I expand the content and price it I can then start to recruit some affiliates to help me sell it.

About guide gecko
by: Anonymous

Hi, Darby. I'm considering guidegecko because I have a travel related title. He contacted me (the owner) but he seemed to be talking about selling the physical book. Since he's in Singapore I assume he uses some sort of drop ship method.

I am more interested in doing an e-book with him. I already have the book typeset and in a pdf file and I already have it for sale as an e-book on Booklocker.com so I should sell it at the same price.

My book is Crafting the Travel Guidebook and its about writing a guidebook. Rather US centered I'm afraid and it seems like people in India are more interested.

As for the associate angle--I'm so techbooby that I have a problem. Was an Amazon associate years ago but can't change the damn thing over. Too bad -- I'd like to do a travelbook review blog and use it.

Anyway your book has a good title --who knows?

Darby, great post and what a gorgeous Site Build It site!

I had never heard of GuideGecko. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. And in case readers don't know what an affiliate program is, I think I should explain.

An affiliate program is one of the main ways writers and web entrepreneurs "monetize" on the internet. Darby's is an example of doing so with an e-product. But a more familiar example would be the Amazon Associates program.

When someone posts to this site and has a book on Amazon, I link to it. I use a special code that identifies me as an Amazon Associate. When a visitor buys the book - or anything else on the visit to Amazon that they launch from my site - I receive a commission. Commissions occur on a sliding scale based on how many sales you make as a webmaster.

Currently (December, 2009), I make 7.5% on my sales. It's one of the primary ways this site monetizes!

Learn more about Amazon Associates.

Darby uses GuideGecko to self publish because it has a specialized travel audience. A bigger site is ClickBank.

Clickbank deals exclusively in ebooks and other e-products. And, as Darby said, this method of online selling offers a lot of advantages. I'd like to expand on two that she mentioned...

1) Their affiliate program allows you to sell (and profit from) books other than your own.

It's true. You'll notice that Darby's site is about more than just free e-cookbooks. It has hundreds of pages and multiple ways of monetizing. Some pages lead more naturally to e-cookbooks published by others. Darby can still make money off of them.

Traffic is wasted if you only market yourself.

2) GuideGecko allows Darby to recruit affiliates.

By giving others an incentive to sell Darby's book, it can reach millions of potential buyers that it wouldn't have otherwise. GuideGecko gives Darby a reach multiplier!

Darby, thanks again!
