Giving my book away

by Marie Wakefield
(Kansas City, Mo. USA)

Dodging Her Chariot

Dodging Her Chariot

If I'm expected to promote, why am I giving my book away?

I read everything I could find on getting published from the net and libraries. I accidently found info on self publishing, and researched it too.

It all said this to me – “Miracles happen and, occasionally, unknown writer’s without the “who you know” on their side get published after a few queries, a contract offering a tiny royalty, usually waiting 18 months to two years before the book hits the shelves” and “even if I’m that fortunate, I still have to build a platform and do most of the promoting myself because trad publishers will drop my book after three months if it doesn’t hit best seller status right away.” Why am I giving up control of my book?

The more I researched the more I wondered why any new author would spend much time trying to go through trad publishers.

I decided to give myself 18 months to promote my book rather than sit and wait for a trad publisher to do something with it. It will either carry itself or it won’t either way.

With much prayer and finished book in hand, including the cover I designed, I decided to try both options. In case I might be one of those miracles, I learned how to write queries and proposals before I sent out a couple dozen to agents. At the same time I searched for a typesetter, proof reader and printer that a person living on a limited income could hire.

I found all three within 20 miles of my home. In addition a couple that goes to my church offered to create my web site before I knew what an advantage it would be.

The last of my “Thanks but no thanks” agent returns arrived at about the same time that I got to pick up my first book order.

I started Dodging Her Chariot in the summer of 2006 and, after many critique group meetings and rewrites, finished it in late summer of 2009. It’s the first in a four part series.

It really seems to be taking on a life of its own. I recently found out that it will be in over 30 libraries in and around my city. I didn’t see that one coming. I’ve only held two book signings so far and each had over 20 people come to buy books. My web site is selling a few and four stores in the area are carrying them. I’m still gaining experience (and nerve) in the promotion area.

Am I happy that I self published? Maybe it isn’t that miracle breakout I read about, but I think I’m seeing another sort of miracle happen with it. Yes, and I’m already well into doing it again on the second in this series.

Amazing woman! NEW
by: Raquel K.

I met Marie and Nora a year and half ago at church. They were the first people that came up to me (other than our awesome Pastors of course). They immediately invited me to there home and we became fast friends. These are two awesome women of God! I love them more than words can say. I generally am not much of a reader but I just read Marie's book and my heart just broke for her and her family. I could not put her book down. It's just amazing and I can't wait for her next one. I recently met Paul and my heart just sinks at the thought of what he has gone through. Marie has turned into such a wonderfully beautiful Godly woman. Her beauty radiates from somewhere deep inside of her. Jesus is shining through her. She says I love you as much as she can and gives THE best hugs. Thank you Jesus for letting me meet Marie and Nora. Nora recently moved to Texas to be with her son and grandchildren and we miss her terribly. I love you Marie and Nora!

Wow!
by: Linda A.

I read your book cover to cover TWICE before I could put it down...now, six months later I am reading it again with as much fresh enthusiasm as the first two back-to-back reads. I will admit it: I'm a "Dodging" addict who needs to check into "Reader's Rehab"! I'm anxiously awaiting book #2's release so I can put "Dodging her Chariot" back on my bookshelf.

Marie, You are a talent and an inspiration and I have every faith that God (and self-publishing) will bless you with success. Keep up the great work!

On Publishing
by: Marlee Huber

Enjoyed your perspective on how going with a trade publisher is giving your book away. Interestingly, trade publishers are coming the writer's way and moving toward self publishing. Funny how trends trend and tipping happens.

Riveting, Can't wait !!!
by: Anonymous

I have never been much of a reader, however, when I heard about this wonan's story I was curious. I couldn't put this one down. I can't wait for the next book. Growing up I have heard some small tipes of stories like these but have never heard of all these trials in one child. I commend her for telling her story to the world and with no self pitty. This just reminds people to be thankful of what they have even if it isn't much. When I talked to my mother about this book, I told her it was very good and I learned alot about families and could not wait for the next book. I want to know what happens to her and her daughter Cora after the end of this one. This book tells a riveting non stop story. Excellent!

Amazing Story of Courage!
by: Rita Winfrey

Marie, I was hooked from beginning to end of this book! My emotions were so caught up in the story that a few time's I wanted to jump in and rescue you from the things happening to you and your family. I felt your protectiveness toward your little brother Paul..and your sister Nora. The courage it took for you to put all of this story in a book is amazing in itself! Not to mention what courage it took you to live it! After i raved about your book, I gave it to my daughter Rachel. She too was amazed at this story and all you went through. She love it from beginning to end. Thanks for being brave enough to share with us! God truly had his had on you then, and still today, he is leading you into great things. That still small voice...keep following it!

Kudos, Marie
by: Alma Quick

I am in awe of Marie's talent, determination and faith. As a member of one of her critique groups, I heard parts of her book before it was finished. That didn't deter one bit from my enjoyment at reading the finished product from beginning to end. Marie tells her amazing story in a matter-of-fact fashion with no hint of self pity. And she has bravely gone against well meanng advice and traveled the self publishing road with surprising success. She is an inspiration! I'm ready to dive into the next book in her series.

Dodging her Chariot
by: Suzanne Lieurance

Marie's book is incredible! I met Marie at a big book signing over the summer and I interviewed her for my podcast "Author Interviews with the Working Writer's Coach" at http://www.workingwriterscoach.com

At the time of the interview, I hadn't read her book. But, shortly after the interview, I did get the chance to read it. From the minute I started reading I was hooked. As a fellow author, I was also impressed with Marie's writing. She was so brave to reveal so much of herself in this book. And it was an emotional read, yet I didn't get the feeling she was looking for anyone's pity or sympathy. She simply had a story she needed to tell. And what a story it was! I can't wait for the next book in this series. I've been recommending this book to everyone I know!
