It's free to publish me?

Tales of the Tree People

Tales of the Tree People

My first children's book Tales of the Tree People "To tree...or not to tree?" was traditionally published. Shortly after it was published I went through the trouble of sending my second manuscript to Publish America. Because my sales were so low, they wouldn't publish my second book. I had no money for promoting my first book, and I'm a writer, not an agent so I got tired of really trying to promote my book, when I don't care for crowds and I would rather write. I was tired of submitting to traditional publishers and not getting anywhere. Most publishers won't even talk to you without an agent, so I did get an agent, but nothing has happened so far...I decided instead of waiting around for a publisher, why not publish myself for free...I am able to use the illustrations that I did myself as covers for my books. If a traditional publisher were to come along, I could un-publish my books at any time. Why not have my work for sale, while looking for a publisher? It made sense to me...

What is Publish America?
by: Anonymous

Yes, I went over to the Amazon page for the tree book and sure enough it was published by PublishAmerica. As people may or may not know, PublishAmerica refused to sign on with Amazon's Book Surge ultimatum, so all Buy buttons have been removed. It isn't that bad because the reader is sent directly to the Amazon Marketplace sellers, so someone can buy the book if he wants to.
As for PublishAmerica being a self-publisher, a traditional publisher or a subsidy publisher--I guess it's none of the above and all of the above. Somebody called the outfit an "author mill" but that's not a term that is generally known. PA calls itself a traditional publisher but of course it really isn't, because a traditional publisher pays for the production and promotion of the book and makes sure it is available to the public. PA mostly charges add-ons to its authors and bullies the author's friends and families into buying the book by sending out letters and e -mails. It's always been difficult to get PA books into bookstores and now you can't even get onto Amazon with a Buy button! True they don't charge for printing the book, but they make their money through the back door. Just my 2 cents.

Webmaster's gotta jump in...
by: Steve B. (webmaster)

I just want to say that this IS The Shared Self Publishing Experience, and the reason Lori was invited to contribute about Tales of the Tree People is because it was printed by PublishAmerica. There's debate in the writing community about whether PublishAmerica is best described as a traditional publisher or a self publishing outfit. In light of that debate, I've elected to make posting to the website open to PublishAmerica authors. So just so everyone knows: Lori did not sneak in; she belongs! (Even if she does come down on the "traditionally published" side of the argument.)

And isn't her cover gorgeous??? You're quite the artist, Lori!

Thank you so much for your comment! Wal-mart sells my first book because it was traditionally published. The other three books are available at... www.lulu.com because they were self published.

Hi Lori
by: Lee Brooks

I really felt drawn to your submission. I also do not care for crowds and would rather write. I love the cover of your book. I do have a question how did you get Walmart to sell your books?
