My First experience - with BLURB

Angels At The Gate (Coming Soon!) Angel In The Mist Ascending Angels SCOOP

I have a project I've been putting together for years and the photographs are wonderful - I've decided my audience is world-wide and fully believe that this can be a big seller (laugh at or with me later please...)

I chose BLURB without researching their quality reviews.

The BookSmart program is very easy to use and quite flexible. When I did need help, I found the responses adequate and was able to solve the problems I faced. It was email as I couldn't get a person on the phone.

I did a first run of a 40 page paperback book - mostly photos. I chose premium paper.

The book looks beautiful - as long as I do not open it!

Upon opening, I immediately saw that it was not binded properly - each page has a black background & what I was looking at was white down the center of the book which should have been inside the binding part.

Within 4 days, 20 of the 40 pages fell out.

Blurb sent me a new book - and I see it has the same problem!

A publishing person I met told me that with paperbacks like this, if I go up to 48 pages, it may make all the difference. However, I've decided to take it to another level. I am doing a 100+ page coffee table book, hardcover.

The benefit of using Blurb is that I have no upfront costs. Rather, I can list the book in their store, buyers will order there, pay PayPal, then Blurb makes & sends out the book to them.

I have no up front costs; I do not have to deal with shipping, etc. They only take their costs - such a deal!

But, if the quality on the hardcover is just as bad as the softcover, there is a problem.

Does anyone know of a company offering the sales/shipping/no pay upfront opportunities that Blurb does with proven quality??

I'd appreciate any & all insights.

Many thanks - CaroleSue

I used Edition One Books in Berkeley, CA
by: Michael

I shared this exact predicament, CaroleSue, where Lulu made some decent books for me but the quality was unacceptable as a photographer. So I did a lot of research on self publishing and I was recommended using Edition One. I looked on their website and it wasn't as fancy as Blurb or Lulu but I gave them a call anyways. If anything, a lot of burden was relieved to talk to a person who knew my name, every time I called. This really helps when I need to call about changes in printing or I have questions. They gave me some free test prints and afterwards, I went ahead and ordered my books. The quality of the binding and printing is undoubtedly superior to any other big name services. I really recommend you get some test prints from this place and give them a call. It's definitely more work to get books printed from them because not a lot is automated but it's definitely worth your time and effort. The books will speak for themselves.

Blurb quality - f/u question
by: CaroleSue

Does anyone have experience with the hardcover product Blurb offers?

My problem is that I already know this program, I've decided to do a larger book, etc.

It's easiest for me to complete what I've started with Blurb & market it in their store, THEN try to find another company with consistent good quality products where I don't have to deal with paying for product up front.

I would like to find one where the program is easy; where the book can be ordered in hard or soft cover (price...), they have an online store, etc.

I'd really appreciate any feedback - especially on the quality of Blurb's hardcover books. Mine will be between 100 - 120 pages.

MANY, many thanks!
