Pat in Publishingland

For most new authors, I would strongly recommend self publishing your book. The amount of time and effort it takes to garner an agent and more importantly a traditional publisher to represent your work is depressing. On top of that, your chances of succeeding are remote. Publishers are looking for writers with name recognition and a built-in audience. In most cases your writing ability has very little to do with your chance of success.
These days days for less than one thousand dollars, you can get your book in print and have a simplistic consulting service helping to navigate you through the marketing and sale process. These print on demand companies are offering more services and the pricing is very reasonable.
Once your book is published, you have a product. This product can not only generate book sales, but can open doors to speaking engagements, radio interviews and a plethora of marketing opportunities. In many cases the revenue generated by these marketing ventures will far exceed income from book sales.
I would rather spend my time writing and marketing versus wishing and hoping that a major publisher will give an unknown first-time writer a big break.
