Publishing an e-Book

Publishing "Skinsational" Books! (Naturally)

Genre: Health/Skin Care

Hi all,

I am a beginner publisher and wanted to share what I have learned about the publishing an e-book with those of you interested in self-publishing your work.

First of all, it is actually surprisingly easy. Of course, it didn't seem so easy when I started thinking about writing an e-book but if you take each step one at a time everything falls into place without a great deal of effort.

I wrote my book, Naturally Skinsational ~ Rejuvenating Skin Care Recipes, in response to the avid interest the visitors to my website, The Skin Care e-Learning and Resource Center, have expressed in natural skin care recipes that specifically treat aging skin concerns. So basically my beginning self-publishing efforts is in essence what I fondly refer to as a "Tell and Sell" e-book.

The initial publishing basic steps involved:

Researching the content and formulating recipes for the book
Writing the book itself
Hiring an editor to proof-read the book
Formatting the book to convert into a PDF file
Creating a graphic image for the e-book cover
Writing a sales page for my website to describe the book
Creating an account at ClickBank to manage customers and sales
Marketing and advertising

I have started to plan out a more comprehensive marketing strategy which will include creating a hardcover and paperback version of the e-book. I then plan on obtaining an ISBN number so that I will be able to list the book for sale on Amazon.com, Google Books as well as register the book for print-on-demand publication on sites such as CafePress and LuLu.

Once I've accomplished those remaining publishing basic steps I expect to be a self-publishing graduate and move along to my next publishing venture!

All and all, it is a very satisfying process that has potential for significant rewards in not only income but in satisfaction.

Happy Publishing!

My Best,

Sue

Shrewd net marketing
by: Steve B.

Sue, thanks for sharing. Visitors...

Sue gets the 'net.

First sign that she understands how the Web works is that she posted to this site. She knows the value of inbound links. In fact, she wrote me with her contribution html-formatted and absolutely full of links.

(I removed almost all of them. But she sure gets it.)

This excellent sense of how the Web works is reflected in her traffic! It's impossible for me to know exactly how many visitors show up at her site, but I visited Alexa.com to get a vague idea. As of this date, her site is ranked in the top 200,000 sites on the net. How high is that? Consider that there are probably 150,000,000 sites on the net.

Figure Sue for the top 1-2 tenths of one percent!

Type in skin care resources; she currently comes in 1st on google.
Type in skin care ebook and there she is at #8.
Type in anti aging skin care and she's back up to #3.

The list goes on.

I hear some of you saying that the site appears a bit promotional, and how can what Sue does apply to me and serious fiction/non-fiction book? Wouldn't I have to promote my book as the miracle cure for something?

Sure, that's what Sue does. But she also does some things that can be applied to any website.

Her site is loaded with text/"content"/free information on a widely searched subject.

Is yours? Or is yours stingy with information on a narrowly searched subject - namely you and your book?

No matter what your own book is about, it can be placed within a larger context.

If it's about a trip to Saturn, its larger context might be Science Fiction Books. Or Astronomy.

If it's a picture book about a girl and her aging dog, its larger context might be Children's Books. Or Pets. Or Coping With Loss.

Any of those bolded, oft-searched topics could provide grist for a website filled with valuable information that surfers search for. Your self published book could then reside on this valuable, busy virtual real estate.

So before you write off Sue's marketing efforts as having nothing to do with your own...think again.
