Hi Steve and all the famous writers, artists, illustrators and lovers of life who come near this site. Sorry I have not been back for a while, but I have been reading your emails. I am encouraged by Ilene with her beautifully crafted book and her compelling story.

I just wanted to say that my indie publishing has gone bananas (I do live in Queensland, Australia). In October, 2010, I was directed to another wonderful man (sorry Steve), a hero, Mark Coker, who established a fantastic ebook site, Smashwords. Within a few months I have published 8 (thinking now) books, including my new illustrated Children's story, Runaway Princesses. (I am in love with these little characters). I spent a lot of time using my Wacom tablet and photoshop to do my pictures. Unfortunately I did not know that I was supposed to set the dpi to 300 before I started, so that caused a bit of pain. )

I finally finished this fantasy story and published it.

I also became a winner in the NaNoWriMo contest, November, 2010, and published the story 50 Hours on 19th December, 2010. It's about 3 middle aged Aussie women who are arrested for drug smuggling in Bali). It is hillarious and already has a wonderful review on Smashwords. I also did the cover for that as well. I did it in one day, which means I am getting faster, and I hope, improving.

I would not go back to any other way of publishing (maybe if I was offered a good package deal I might reconsider this), as I have had so much fun just getting the work out there, without hindrances and big budgets to consider. If you think of the cost of getting truck loads of books, think of this: I have published 11 books altogether this year alone, and more are on their way: 11 books @ $5,000 for 200 (the price I paid a few years ago) = $55,000, with no guarantee of sales. That is another big cost, billboards, carting books from store to store. I would be dead! Thank you, Steve for being here, being free and giving indies a real go. You and Mark should get together and celebrate. Two rare finds in the whole world. Thank you again. Marie

Anyone selling books on Smashwords?
by: Marie Seltenrych

Hi Steve and all writers,

Thank you for your great encouragement and for giving me the chance go showcase my work. I also had a quick look at the webserver; seems like a good idea. I will think about that too.

You asked questions about anyone selling books on Smashwords, well, I haven't sold any because I have made them all free to download, however, things might change in the future, if I become more popular or a title gets mobbed. Some of my books have been approved for the catalogue and have isbns (all free).

If you check Smashwords from the home page, you will find that most books have a price, set by the author, anything from .99c upwards. There are also tabs giving details of most downloads etc. at top of page. So, I think people can make money there.

If you want to know how many really sell books, contact Mark Coker at Smashwords by taking his first and last initial @smashwords.com (Mark gives us a puzzle to solve). I am sure he will be honest with you, Steve, as he is very dedicated and down to earth.

Thanks again. I will try to promote your great work. Can I get a link for my website?

Marie

Smashwords numbers
by: Steve B. (webmaster)

Marie, thanks for another great post...and for the flattery!

As usual, I'm curious about the numbers. Are you reaching a greater readership on Smashwords? Do you have to drive traffic there or do the readers find you?

I notice you have the books available for free there, so this question is for other Smashwords authors: Is anyone selling any books over there?
