Self Publishing a Children's book

by Emerson Colwell, Jr
(Peoria, AZ)

The Bay Gull

The Bay Gull

Thanks for this great site! I wish we had found it months ago!

The idea for the children's book came from a dream in August, 2008. That morning, I wrote out the story as best as I could remember which was rhyming tale about a sea gull traveling throughout Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island.

Once I finished the story, I began working on the illustrations. The drawings took about 3 weeks to complete. I scanned everything onto the computer, added the text and realized I needed about 5 more drawings to complete the story. Another couple of weeks went by and the drawing were complete.

My wife worked on editing the rhymes and formatting them for all the pages. This really was a joint project as she was able to do all the behind the scenes work for the book. We printed out the book and started showing it to friends to get their feedback while sending it out to publishers, too.

We found publishers online through search engines and by looking through our children's books. With out busy schedules, we were only sending out a few every month. There were no takers and in hindsight, it may have been because I sent along the illustrations as I have read that they can be a negative for a publisher.

By the end of March, 2009, my wife and I decided to go ahead and self publish the story. We started by creating a company name, website, and getting registered with the state.

At the same time, we were contacting printing companies for quotes on the book. About six weeks later, we had 4 firm quotes for printing. This process took a while for several reasons.

Some companies had never printed children's books before so they were not sure if they could perfect bind such a small quantity of pages (14 sheets) or if they could do the cover & pages sturdy enough for children. A couple of larger companies who we knew were familiar with children's book printing never got back to us. Ultimately, we chose to go with a local company who outsourced the binding process. Their price was not the lowest, but the customer service was great and they were excited to work on the project.

We were also busy scheduling the books "debut" in Rhode Island through author appearances and book signings. Our first few scheduled appearances were at locations where we knew the owners and they were happy to help us get publicity. A few e-mails to book store owners resulted in a few more appearances. In total, we scheduled 7 appearances over 5 days.

My trip to Rhode Island was 8 days long and the other 3 days were filled with visits to local stores to see if they would like to carry the book. Today, four months later, we have 20 stores carrying the book.

Back in Arizona, I have scheduled appearances at book stores, schools and special events to share the book with children. We are still at the very start of our journey but we are happy to share with anyone who is interested in learning more. There is information on our website and our blog that we hope will be useful for others, too.

Thanks you for the opportunity to tell our story!

Thank you for inspiring me to keep up with the entire process!

How inspiring to read all of your comments. After many years of procrastination, I have finally completed my first children's book. Reading all of the comments on your site has truly inspired me to get out my paints and pencil crayons, go to my saved google pictures of dragons, and start the illustration process... and then I'll be ready to go from there. Looks like I'll need a website, a blog, look for a printer... get ready to pack books into boxes and do some driving around and some presenting. What an adventure! Thanks to all!

Getting started
by: Kevin

Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences.

I'm at the beginning of the process and really appreciate reading other peoples experiences to help motivate me to keep going. My wife and I have written what we think is a great story, and are in the process of illustrating.

Very exciting and I hope that one day soon I'll have more to share.

Thanks for sharing your success story, it is a long process. I have just become a self published author of my book "Meet Pooky The New Kid" and I think I have made the right descision of being a self publisher because I am also the illustrator of my own book and other future books for this book series. I wish you the best!

Best Wishes
by: Mona Colwell

Hi Matt,

Thanks for visiting and best to you with your future books. It can be discouraging to look at your prospects on the front end - something that I never did!!

My knowledge of the "industry" came AFTER we had already done everything to bring my husband's book to print! I believed in us, the book and our ideas. We surrounded ourselves with others who believed in us, too.

I encourage you to focus on your work, your purpose, your journey. If you want it bad enough, you will make it happen!

We have more about our journey on our blog, www.emersoncolwell.blogspot.com.

Thank you!

Mona

Thanks for sharing your story. I am recently getting started in writing and would love to publish someday. I have researched publishers and have The Writer's Market but it seems that most are not accepting unsolicited manuscripts. It was very inspiring to hear your story and that you took the initiative to go out and get it done! I wish you the best and encourage you to keep up the great work!

Thank you, Steve!
You are right, we don't come up and I had no idea what to do about it.
I love your advice and I will start working on that this week.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Rhode Island children's book
by: Steve B. (webmaster)

Emerson and Mona, thanks for the kind words! Thank you also for a wonderful post.

There's a post on my other site I'd like you to read. It's by a self publisher who, like you, set his book in a very specific place. He's had a great deal of success marketing it IN that place.

I have a website tip for you. About 170 people a month perform Google queries including the words Rhode Island children's book. Currently, I don't see you ranking for that query, but you should!

Consider devoting an entire page on your site only to The Bay Gull. Give it the url http://www.tinkinkpublishing.com/rhode-island-childrens-book.html. Label your images similarly, giving them "alt" tags and titles as well. Describe the book in Rhode Island terms (hopefully with an original description).

My hunch is that if you do all that, you'll start getting a bit of well-targeted traffic, people who are looking for precisely what you have to offer!
