Self Publishing Because of Subject Matter

by Tina Brooks McKinney
(Covington, GA, USA)

Dubious

Dubious

Genre: Contemporary Romance

I started my writing career in 2004 and got picked up by mainstream publishing. Tina published - a trilogy, actually - with Strebor books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. But last month, I published my own book called Dubious. My publishing company is Taboo Publishing.

The reason I decided to self publish was because of the subject matter.

Dubious is a story with beastiality in it. Although it's a small portion of the book, my publisher decided not to do it. She did say that I would make a million on the book if I sold it on the internet.

I don't know yet if I will publish others but I will do other books that have a dangerous edge to them that I know traditional publishers would be afraid of.

Tina also does an internet radio show, Real Talk with Tina McKinney. It's a book show, "focused on both traditional and self published authors whose voices are seldom heard." As you can imagine, the show brings attention to Tina and her own work.

It's a weekly show that now airs on Tuesday night at 7:00 EST. I've been off air for a few months while I finished my latest book but I start back up tomorrow.

For one hour, I interview (1) guest and we talk about their books, the writing process, self publishing, you know everything about the business. The only catcher is that I read each book. I don't like to have anyone on the show for 1 hour and not know what to say to them.

When I first started doing the show, I used to buy all the books but I had to cut that out. Now, if it is not a book that I already have, I ask the writer to send me the book.

I don't resell books and I do read them and talk about them. I do not read over the computer so no email submissions. (I spend enough time in front of one writing LOL.) If anyone wants to hear how my shows go, I have plenty of archives. I've been doing this for over two years.

I prefer not to do non-fiction unless it's a moving story. I prefer fiction, a good mystery, horror and sci-fi.

If someone would like to be on the show, they would need to send a book and give me a few weeks to read it. Then I will schedule the interview. I believe self published authors are the gems of the literary world.

Great what you're doing

Thanks, Tina, for everything. And what you said about writers who don't read?

Amen. I like to trust that, also, they don't get read.

thanks for the welcome
by: Tina McKinney

Steve,

I love speading the word about books. Before I started writing, I was a reader and that hasn't changed. I love nothing better than to read a good book and when I'm finished, discussing it. So doing the show was natural for me.

There are some people in the business who won't do this and I have zero tolerance for them. I also don't enjoy writers that don't read. I think that is very narrow minded and to be honest stupid.

I also love what you are doing here. The other big thing I hate about the industry is the fact that some folks aren't willing to share. I believe in giving back what was given freely to me. So, trust and believe if I learn something, I will share it! And I intend to start my learning right on these webpages.

All That Drama
by: Steve B. (webmaster)

Wow, Tina. I just read an excerpt on your site from the first book in your trilogy. It's feeling very hot in here!

I'm going to share the first sentence of that book, because I liked it so much.

If I knew yesterday that I would be fighting for my life today, I would have done things differently starting with last night.

You know, Tina, I'll tell you what I like most about what you're doing. In one of my newsletters, I wrote an article, Building a Generous Site. The thesis is that internet success results from spreading focus beyond oneself.

You do that in a huge way with your radio show, which is all about others. (Similarly, your site would draw more search engine traffic if you followed the same strategy there!)

I want to thank you, thank you, thank you on behalf of the authors who visit this site for your offer to consider their books for your show. Anything more you'd like to say about that or anything else?
