Stand

Stand

My journey with Stand started ten years ago when I made the choice to share my life. This was not an easy decision for the simple reason that alot of my life choices were not something I was proud of. But I had a message to share so I went through with the writing of Stand and then I faced the brick wall of no after no from agents and publishers. It is not an easy task to get a book published especially if you are not a fantastic writer and you are virtually unknown to the world. I made the decision to self publish for the simple reason it was at the time the only way to reach the public with my story. I hired a woman ( Amy Collns with The Cadence Group) who knew the publishing world and she assisted in getting Stand edited and also set up an account with Baker Taylor for distribution. Then it was on to print. I am a printer by trade but the book world was unknown territory to me again Amy assisted in the print production and then had Stand excepted into Amazon. After that is was excepted by Borders and Barnes & Noble. My journey continued with promoting my book and let me just say it is a humiliating experience trying to promote yourself. But I was determined to keep going and with a few book signings and radio shows it started to move. Self publishing is something that can be discouraging but if you believe in your writing it is a good way to get into an impossible industry. I have noticed so many wonderful writers that have self published. The traditional publishers control the market and stifle what is available for the public to read. I kept on my journey and opened my own publishing company. I have a series of childrens chapter books and a romance novel I am working on and plan to self publish. You need to blog everyday about your book, open a myspace page and join in on book conversations in Borders and Barnes & Noble. Keep your face in the public eye anyway you can think of. I now know enough about self publishing to be dangerous but hey life is a ride isn't it! Happy writing and good luck to all of you unknown authors like myself. I am free to ask questions at myspace..

Not easy to get a book published
by: Steve B. (webmaster)

Debbie, you put a big smile on my face when you said this:

It is not an easy task to get a book published especially if you are not a fantastic writer and you are virtually unknown to the world.

I haven't heard many people say that! 'Twas a time when it would have been a silly notion to think that you might be published if you weren't a "fantastic writer."

Those times have changed. And kudos to you, by the way, for being aware of your own weaknesses.

But here's the thing you said that I couldn't disagree with more:

I made the decision to self publish for the simple reason it was at the time the only way to reach the public with my story.

Hello? The internet? It is entirely possible (even likely) that more people will read this page than will read your book!

We live in an age (one that isn't likely to to disappear) when most reading costs nothing. If you simply want to get your story out there, the web is a much better way than a self published book.

And even if you also want to be compensated for your story, a well-executed, traffic-oriented website is the best way to draw attention to your book.

Here's a site by a victim of child abuse who, of course, has her own story to tell.

I've actually corresponded with her (her name is Darlene), because we both use the same service to create our websites.

Her site is huge, and her traffic is huge. How huge? Well, it's hard to know for sure, but this site provides an impressive estimate.

Do you see what I mean? She's reaching about 175,000 people per year. Is that how many books you're selling???

I see that you're using myspace and a blog in addition to your site to generate online attention, but I can tell you that the approach you're taking is not destined to attract a ton of traffic. (And if you want to know why, you can submit your site to me for an online review.)

If what you really want to do is reach the public with your story, here's a little something about how to really attract traffic. And I'm here if you have any questions.

Thanks for posting!
