Three for One

Sweet Emotions

Sweet Emotions

Genre: fiction series

I started out thinking I was writing one book.

Imagine my surprise when my editor told me I had so much material I could do at least three. So began the Song Trilogy. The good news was she told me the way I had written the storylines each book could stand on it's own. Still I now had the task of trying to figure out how I would sell three books.

I had to think in triplicate. Three titles, triple the work, triple the cost and hopefully triple success.

This was my first experience and I didn't have a clue what was involved or what to do about marketing. I hired a publicist. That was an adventure because you basically put your life and money in their hands. They came up with all these great ideas and kept in touch with me every week if not more. Unfortunately only about a quarter of the plans were attempted or accomplished.

Just as the second book was ready I found different publicist and decided to give it another try. I have to say not everything in the plan got done but I had a much better response and opportunities. Besides signings I did both a radio and television interview.

As book three is being ready for publication I will employee the same firm to help. I also have a part time assistant who often has been successful with finding opportunities for me. I'm working on a plan to help both myself in selling books and raising funds for charitable groups. With any luck both will benefit.

Visit The Song Trilogy.

Answers to Three For One
by: Jan Bornstein

I do belive my editor is correct that each book can stand alone. I've asked readers for their opinion and they agree.

Doing the three books was not planned but after going through all the editing and having them all published I can understand why it was necessary. I think one big book would be too much for readers to be attracted to read. I'm not sure I would change anything if I had to do it over again. The only way I could change it would be to leave out some storylines but that would take away from everything I was trying to address.

Ever though it cost me a lot more than I anticipated and I had to come up with three titles instead of one, I'm satisfied with the results.

A edition that combines all three? I'll have to check into it. I really didn't know you could do it.

3 books: The right decision?
by: Steve B.

Jan, I'm wondering if, in retrospect, you feel the editor was right. (I'm hoping you do!)

Was three books the smart way to go? What would you do differently if you had it to do again?

Have you considered an edition that combines all three?

I'm sure we'd all like to know! Respond by commenting.
