TV Guy Writes Book
by James Doughty
(San Antonio, TX)
Some Monument to Last
The idea to write my story came shortly after I interviewed Walter Cronkite. For years I had been searching for a picture of my father's, information about his family and other relatives still living related to him. All this came to a head, when I interviewed Walter Cronkite, my great-uncle happened to be at the same event, and he had a name tag on with my last name. That small talk led to a meeting and the discovery we were related. As a television journalist, I've told other people's stories for 10 years, finally I had one of my own. I had written on and off for six years, three years ago I got more serious about organizing my book and called an editor. Lillie Ammann is a self-published author, writer and editor and has helped me with every detail of my book. Marketing so far, has been among friends and family. Later, I plan to do more events to get my story out. I've already discovered giving a book away to a charity event is a good way to advertise. As a local celebrity I plan to do more press when the time is right. I'd expect the local media critic to pick up on the news and I may try to do some radio and TV. I also believe in newspaper ads, and plan to buy some in the near future. Having a website makes advertising easier. Lillie Ammann has encouraged me to blog. I'm getting better at the idea, and would one day prefer to vlog instead. Finally, I do standup comedy and part of my act is my real life story, only told in humor. I'm able to advertise the book after my set and plan to sell the books at my shows. As much as I'd like Oprah to help me promote my book, in fact, she's even mentioned in my book, I plan to push my story for the rest of my life. It's a true story and it's all mine and now that it's in print, it's another dream accomplished in my life.
