Write about lawyers, deal with lawyers

Scandal in the Courtroom book cover

My story was very difficult to write and I hired an editor that took out a lot of things that added nothing to the story. He started out fine but abandoned the job near the end.

Because I used real names of lawyers and such that violated the law I had a problem finding someone to publish my book. AuthorHouse told me to consult a lawyer on the libel problem. I spent several thousand more with a lawyer's OK, but AuthorHouse returned my money anyway. Bookmasters did publish it (without asking for a lawyer's opinion.) They did a great job on the front cover, but I believe I could have improved the back cover.

Again I was looking at it from my position and not from the person picking up the book. Their Atlas Books division handles distribution. I spent big bucks with a pr firm in California to get radio interviews, but after spending thousands I only got about three and few book sales. He sent out letters to his contacts and radio stations.

I also advertised with Atlas, but it didn't seem to do much although it didn't cost as much. I did advertising at book shows through Atlas Books and sales are slow but seem to be building a year later. I took out several ads in the New York Times Book Review and got my best response for the November - December issues. The sales helped build sales but did not pay the cost of the ads.

Bookmasters got me an ad with another radio interview newsletter and I got two interviews so far at a reasonable cost. I just received literature from Talkers Magazine and H & H Communications to advertise with them. I will continue to advertise.

For my web site I hired a local company and am pleased. I have changed it several times. One promoter, again from California, promised to build traffic, but it was a waste of money.

Will the book ever make money? Probably not. The story is a story worth telling and I believe it could be made into a very good movie. Judges should not be beyond the reach of the law. I believe this one took a bribe and I would like to think that when a complaint is lodged against a judge someone investigates. One benefit had been my son has had a lot less problems since the book came out and has been advertised where he lives.

P.S. There has been no lawsuits.

I'm touched
by: Steve B.

Grant, I'm guessing that you never considered yourself an author. So I'm touched by a father, so compelled by an injustice done his son, that he resolved to write a book.

Thanks for telling us what did and didn't work in the way of marketing and publicity.

I'm sorry that what happened left such a bitter taste in your mouth. I hope you're able to find peace with it.
