Let's admit it, no matter how good your novel may be, there is little chance that some publisher will take it, pay anything for it, and publish it. Most big publishing companies are too devoted to, Movie Stars, Famous people, Politicians, and just plain crap to really publish much else. As with all things in this world today, it is not the quality, but the quantity of sales, or the bottem dollar that will determine if you books are published or not.
I wrote my first novel at the age of 54, entered it in a Novel Writing Contest, The International Writer's Guild in 1984 and to my surprsie actually won the Top Honorable Mention award out of over 8000 entries. I self published the book at a cost of over $10,000.00 at that time for there were few places to self publish which cost less than that. The book, "A LEAF FALLS BUT ONCE" did not sell well in the United States, but did very well overseas. Since publication I have sold over 10,000 copies.
After retirement, I became very bored with life and once again turned to my computer and started writing a novel based on my experience on a working tour of the Far East and being stationed in the Philippines. Again, as my last novel, this was a genres of Romance. And this time, I self published the book thru a Publish on Demand basis. Again, the book became quite popular.
Since then, and now at the age of 73 I am still writing novels. Up until my latest one, "A SLEEPING GIANT", they have all been Romantic in genres, but "A SLEEPING GIANT is a fictional science fiction thriller based on my working for NASA at Huntsville, Alabama, and Cape Canaveral, Florida. Again, I self published this novel and it is now availble for purchase.
I am presently working on three new novels which again are somewhat in the fictional genres outside ROMANCE. So it just goes to show you, you're never too old to take on something and do something new.
